Surgical Instructions
Before IV Sedation

Before you have IV Sedation it is important to read the following instructions carefully.

  • Be here 15 minutes prior to your appointed time
  • The night before surgery eat a light, easily digestible meal; consume no alcoholic beverages and retire early.
  • Do not eat or drink anything after midnight the night before surgery- NO FOODS, NO LIQUIDS, EVEN WATER!!!
  • Brush your teeth several times prior to surgery and rinse with customary mouthwashes.  Do not swallow and water.  Your mouth and teeth should be well cleaned to help avoid the possibility of postoperative infection.
  • No tight clothing should be worn; PLEASE WEAR SHORT SLEEVES.  Dentures, spectacles or contact lenses must be removed- nurse will arrange safekeeping.
  • You must bring someone to wait in the reception room during the surgery to drive you home. 
  • Any patient having sedatives or general anesthetic must specifically agree:
    • NOT to drive a vehicle or operate any machinery the same day
    • NOT to undertake any responsible business matters
    • NOT to drink any alcohol
  • Please call us immediately if you have any symptoms of a head or chest cold.  Your surgery may have to be rescheduled.
  • A parent must be present for a minor patient.
  • Failure to comply with the above instructions could result in your surgery being canceled or require the surgery to be done under a local anesthetic.
